NOTES: Unseen bird was 15-18 meters away and 2-3 meters up in relatively dense undergrowth at edge of an overgrown tree-fall gap in good, terra firme forest well out along trail to far tower (well beyond bridge); a whistled imitation before this was recorded elicited a minimal response (possibly a weak approach), but subsequent playback resulted in a rapid approach and an immediate rattle, followed by a similar song, possibly at a shorter interval, and bird did a broad circle around me; I only glimpsed it as a dark bird of about the right size; although I heard Phlegopsis nigromaculata in the immediate vicinity, I did not locate any ants nearby; partly cloudy, intermittently breezy, 84¡ F. Response to playback: Approach. Response to playback: Normal song. Response to playback: Different song. Other Behaviors: Advertise. Habitat: Rainforest, Evergreen Forest.
