Observation details
Recent counts (past several years) have estimated the Snow Hill Island Emperor Penguin colony roughly between 4,000-7,000 nesting pairs. Today, with helicopters from the Russian icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov, we visited one subcolony (of about half a dozen subcolonies spread within about two kilometers) with a few hundred birds. An incredible experience to see these penguins up close.
