Observation details
Hatching year individual in eastern edge of Vermet. First seen about 8:17PM as it took off from the eastern edge of Vermet along Cell 5, flying south to a point about even with the middle of cell 4, and about 200m west of the dike where I began photographing it. It returned to the spot alongside Cell 5 but became spooky, returned to near the island in south central Vermet, then to the SW corner of Vermet, then into the rookery area of NE Lead Unit. Juvenile (hatching year) individual aged by all brown back lacking new white feathers and wings and tail lacking active flight feather molt (1st summers [SY] molt remiges during the 2nd prebasic molt which occurs Apr-Oct [Pyle II]). Description: large wading bird with long, downcurved bill. Bill orange or pink (not sure which), facial skin slightly brighter shade of same pink/orange color. Iris color not discernible at this distance (about 200m). Upperwing, scapulars, mantle brown, with only a slight white patch at the wrist/shoulder area (appeared to possibly be an out of place feather). Head and neck paler brownish than mantle. Tail base, uppertail coverts, rump, and lower back area white (creating a dowitcher-like wedge up the back in flight). Rectrices tipped black. Legs pale pinkish or fleshy. Underwing white except for remiges which were brown. The bases of the inner primaries (and perhaps a few of the outermost secondaries) showed a small patch of white dorsally. Almost all of these traits are visible in my photos.
