NOTES: Unseen initially but seen well between my recording the two parts of this cut and clearly this species; initially about 15 m away, later about 12 m away, and both times <=1 m above the ground in very dense growth of tangles and vines, some of it bamboo, in the understory of good terra firme forest about 100-150 m beyond fork in back loop of Trilha das Rochas; the bird moved quite a bit and was difficult to follow because it was typically unseen; the second part of the recording was after playback of the birdÕs own calls, in response to which it approached slightly and came around me, at first silently, but it eventually began to call again; the bird, a male, had an orange spot in the center of the crown but it did not erect the crest as is often the case following playback of song [= RCR053-054]. ML: Background subject changed from recordist's original identification of Xiphorhynchus guttatus eytoni to Xiphorhynchus guttatus [eytoni Group] to conform to eBird Taxonomy (v. 1.55). -Jay McGowan/Matt Medler, July 2015. Response to playback: Approach. Response to playback: Normal song. Habitat: Rainforest, Evergreen Forest.
