Observation details
LIFE BIRD :-) Intermediate juvie, first seen around 9:10 with 2-3 or so other jaegers in the area. ID based on a more slender/tapered body than Parasitic (compare the round-bellied Parasitics above to the flat belly on this bird), longer tail relative to the wing base, the pattern of having the pale body color concentrated on the upper chest, and the relatively longer hand/primaries giving the wing a more tern-like appearance. It then headed N(NE?) away from the boat in pursuit of terns, but presumably the same bird doubled back less than a minute later and cruised past the boat giving great looks off to our right (north) before cutting across the bow and vanishing into the distant waves off to the south about 3 minutes after we first noticed it. NOTES FROM VICTOR: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Subadult bird spotted by Gabe Leidy. The bird was found astern coming in behind the boat. Viewed at length by all on board as it coursed westbound parallel within 30 meters at 1-3 meters above wave height. Broke across bow and moved off landward for another protracted viewing from behind. Key features noted and to be sent to the OBRC. Several ID photos obtained.
