Observation details
Immature (1st winter/1st summer) - Mixed with Herring and Ring-billed Gulls near the roosting cormorants on the spit of land halfway across the lake. Medium-sized gull with all-black bill, whitish head, dark and mottled mantle, pale underparts, dark flight feathers and dark band on tail. Longer-looking than Herring Gull, with slimmer head and thinner bill. Mostly stood among the other gulls and preened but was once seen flying out onto the water for a dead fish, which it grabbed and swallowed despite harassment from the other gulls. 2nd county record. Photos taken by Alex of the gull flying around with a fish in its mouth, and being bothered by other gulls: Being chased by 1 HERG and multiple RBGU: Flying above HERG and RBGU: Landing among RBGU:
