Observation details
Looks a lot like a Glaucous-winged Gull, but with a bright pale eye. Photographed. Probably a hybrid, will try to identify from photos later and will amend checklist if possible. More photographs here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tsirtalis/sets/72157630564754358/with/7565118814/ No consensus from Frontiers in Field Identification list. Here are four responses: "Nice photos! I would guess Glaucous-winged X Slaty-backed, which would better explain the pale wingtips than a Glaucous-winged X Slaty-backed. Of course the primaries could have been darker but are now faded. Also, it looks to me like it's in second alternate plumage." -Floyd E. Hayes "To me the shape and general feel (besides the color of course) of the bird most matches a Slaty-back, so I would agree that that quite possibly may be the other parent besides Glaucous-wing." -Logan Kahle "Very neat looking gull, Ryan. I'm interested if anyone has responded to you. My thought was Glaucous-winged x Glaucous." -Amar Ayyash "I don't know what your bird is but I couple of things stand out. It's bill seems unusually yellow for a bird of that age (2nd or 3rd cycle?). And the gray feathers on the mantle are pretty light compared to the nearby GWGU. The light eye and the pale mantle feathers and also the streaking on the neck are suggestive of Herring gull to me. Possibly a Herring X GWGU or Herring X Glaucous Gull. I'm not sure what the yellow bill indicates but maybe its a hormonally early 2nd year or a hormonally late 3rd year." -Andy Kleinhesselink
