Observation details
One of the birds (photos included) had very interesting coloration. As it approached us, the lightness of the head and breast really stood out in contrast to the dark underwing coloration. Looking up at its underside, we noticed it was dark under where the base of the tail would be, and wondered at the time if we were looking at a FEHA's dark v-shaped legs, but we were thrown off because there was no contrast between dark legs and light belly. The light shown through a little and the tail appeared very light at least in the middle section, but we never got to see the tail fanned out. We also never got to see the bird in a soar, but had an initial impression during its loose glide that the wingtips could be tapered like a FEHA. We noticed how dark the belly was. And at certain angles with the light, although the underwing coverts were dark, I thought I had a hint of "commas" on the outer ends like a FEHA might have. We did not notice any extra-dark coloration on the carpal areas (like RLHA), but instead just a uniform dark mottling throughout the underwing coverts. In the first lighter photo, there appears to be a light wing panel like a FEHA. We posted this bird on the Raptor ID Facebook group, and there was considerable discussion... mainly between whether this was a FEHA or RLHA. The consensus appears to have landed on a possibly medium-dark morph, suggested by Allen Fish. In any event, we hope this bird is local and we can locate it again!
