Observation details
Jaeger with white in wings was flying above the surf, approaching from the west. I immediately identified it likely a Pomarine based upon chunky, Gull-like structure and flight style. It did little Shearwatering, despite 25 knot winds and despite coming into shore, only made half-hearted attacks. The plumage showed significant white in the under wing and a pale head. Some identified it as a Parasitic, based upon white under wing and other aspects of plumage. Photos at closer approach revealed the double-patch, otherwise this might have been called a Parasitic by some. I started using structure in my jaeger ID’s a few years ago based upon East and west coast experiences that were confirmed by photos. Structure still seems to be less popular here. We had a second bird that at 150 yards, looked and acted similarly to me but was let go as a jaeger sp since no photos were taken.
