Observation details
*Rare, annual. Continuing female Rufous Hummingbird that's been here for now four winters. Took a long time before she cooperated, first saw her flying around the yard at about 9:45 AM. Didn't see her again until about 11:28, at the feeder on the side of the house, glimpsed through the windows and trees. Thought I wouldn't see her again, but at about 11:30, she came to the main feeder outside the kitchen. Got great views of her through the windows, but still super skittish and got no photos. She came again at 11:35, and this time I finally got some photos and nice views of her perched unobstructed. Overall green-backed selasphorus hummingbird with pale face, rufous sides, and slightly curved bill. Throat has a small patch of red gorget feathers, as expected in older female hummingbirds. Band can be seen on her right foot in the photos, confirming this to be "Shaka" the expected Rufous Hummingbird, rather than a possible Allen's Hummingbird. It's awesome to finally see this bird, thanks so much to Joy for her hospitality!
