Observation details
Pale first-year gull, same size as the larger Herring Gulls (and noticeably larger than ICGU, CAGU, and LBBG). Upperparts low contrast and finely patterned. Primaries same color as upperparts, with paler edges. Short primary projection beyond tail. Plain (not patterned) tertials. Brown tail band. Streaks on neck, head somewhat paler than rest of upperparts. Bill black, quite thick but also rather short (like that in photo 33.10 in Howell and Dunn's book). Pink legs. Primaries too pale for Herring and Thayer's. Glaucous ruled out by lack of bicolored bill. Kumlien's most similar other possibility, but ruled out by large size, short primary projection, plain tertials, and thick bill.
