Apears to be a first year bird molting into winter plumage
Observation details
Re-found the bird first reported by Chris Smith. The bird when originally found was very weak, DLNR harbor folks were able to walk up to it and pick it up. This morning and yesterday it was flying strongly and eating a prodigious amount of food. When first found the bird was picking small crabs off of the harbor wall while paddling behind the moored boats. Then he ate an opelo and a convict tang that one of the DLNR folks had chopped up and was throwing at the bird.
