Observation details
First noted mostly dark tail, in contrast to young Ring-bills. Rectrices blackish at distal ends, extending about half way down feathers, with the rest white. Wingtips all dark (primaries and coverts), secondary coverts from above paler dusky brown and gray. Secondaries black at base with white trailing edge. From below the wingtips were dark and the secondary coverts were white with a faint gray line running down the lesser coverts. Secondaries were blackish with white tips.White rump and uppertail coverts blazingly obvious in flight. Head all dark sooty gray, paler on lores, chin, and throat. Bill black, legs blackish. Chest dusky gray/brown, lower chest, belly, and undertail coverts white. Back evenly light brown with crisp whitish edges to tertials, therefore still in juvenal plumage.
