Observation details
Identified in the field as a Clay-colored Sparrow, with close looks through binoculars, but I had only seen a few before this. Photographed, but the photo is poor (taken with my pocket point-and-shoot, to give an indication of how close I was), but I believe sufficient to show the clean gray collar, more distinct than on most or all Brewer's and Chipping Sparrows, as well as the more contrasty facial pattern, especially the distinct lateral throat stripe (on the "lower" side of the white malar). Brewer's Sparrows were present for comparison, but Chipping Sparrows weren't.
