Observation details
Two females foraging together at the edge of the blackberry patch by the bridge to the island may be of the Rocky Mountain race, Piplio maculatus montanus. Their heads were slate gray, lighter than the Pacific Coast races of Spotted Towhees, and the white on the underside of the tail looked more extensive. After I snapped a couple of so-so pictures, I was distracted by another bird, and when I looked back they were gone, probably back into the thicket.
