Media notes
Nazca Booby, west of San Miguel Island, CA - 5 Sep 2018
Observation details
This bird came up our wake and flew by the boat without circling or returning. Large white booby with brownish-black primaries, secondaries, and greater and median coverts. The lesser coverts were white with blackish spotting closer to the body. The trailing edges of the wings and outer primaries were worn and tattered. The body, lesser coverts, and underwing coverts were white. The rump had brownish-black markings on it and the side of the head had a faint dusky patch, which is apparently a distinguishing character for Nazca Boobies of this age (the head of Masked Boobies are pure white at this age per Howell). The tail was dark with white extending down the center rectrices on the uppertail. The bill was orangish, the facial skin around the eyes and the base of the bill was blackish, and the eye was golden-colored.
