Observation details
Group of birds 20 metres offshore in Lake Minnewanka, swimming like gulls/ducks when I first noticed them. The flew towards the center of the lake before I could get stopped. They were next to a large group of Horned Grebes. I first noticed them moments before they flew, and failed to realize what they were. The flashing black and white wings caught my attention and I quickly made a few (not very good) images. On closer inspection of the images after returning home, I realized they were American Avocets behaving more like ducks. As far as I can tell from the images, they were flying with their legs tucked up.
