Observation details
Identified by our guide, Elmer Escoto - see photo - another person on the trip, Greg Johnson, commented: According to the Honduras bird book, common tern is only a migrant in Honduras, while Roseate is the one that breeds there. Also, if you blow up the attached photo, you can see that the tail extends well beyond the wings in the birds we saw, which is appropriate for roseate tern. In common tern the tail is shorter than the wings. Roseate terns in full breeding plumage do have all black bills, but later in the breeding season the base of the bill turns red as in these photos (see Sibley field guide).
