Observation details
I'm not sure who initially found them, but Natalie let us know about them. Thanks Nat! All four were females/immatures. All were brownish birds, with the crown/cap darker than face. Two white face patches (one behind the bill and the other behind the eye) made up the characteristic pattern with a dark bar running vertical between them, with the white patch tween the eye and bill being mostly vertical as well in the sense that the patch stopped at the bill, whereas the patch seems to be more oval and run ontop and into the bill on a white-winged scoter female/immature, immediately letting us know these were surf scoters versus white-winged without even having to note the lack of white patch on the wings, which, of course, we did, too. :)
