Observation details
First observation at this location (and was a lifer for me, at that. I had been hoping to see this species in the area after noting it had been observed recently at Madonna Landfill, just a few miles away (https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S48649007). A trip there proved fruitless, but then I got to see this one while chasing the confusing movements of numerous catbirds, buntings, and a handful of warblers through the fall foliage. Alerted to its presence by repeated "yank yank yank yank", much more nasal in quality than white-breasted nuthatch. Eventually, I did observe it very briefly as it perched out onto a limb right at woodline at edge of a cornfield. In that brief time, all that stood out was the body shape and that black bar/ wide stripe across the eye. I could hear it laughing as it continued farther along into the woods. I heard another (or same) about an hour later.
