Observation details
Flushed from elms southwest of the ball field. Frequently flew from tree to tree, continually trying to get back to original tree in which it had apparently invested a lot of sap well effort. Juvenile bird with only flecks of red on crown, absolutely none on nape or throat. ID was made on basis of date (two months early for yellow-bellied sapsucker normal winter arrival in northeastern CO) and lack of golden or tan hues on the back (which yellow-bellies usually have). Bird was silent.
