Observation details
Reported earlier this morning by members of the S'toon Nature Society. Field marks noted: smallish loon with relatively thin neck, small head and thin bill; bird had gray face and sides of neck with some narrow, white streaking still present on lower nape; the beautiful reddish-brown throat was on full display!; brownish back with some whitish spots and streaks - especially on upper portion; whitish underparts with some darker brown streaking along sides; the bill was dark, with straight upper and slightly-angled lower mandibles which gave it the classic "upturned" appearance. Bird dove several times, but in the excitement of the moment, I don't recall seeing it catch anything! Eventually, it slowly drifted past us and as photos later revealed, had it's eyes closed for a little siesta!!! This was my first RTLO in SK since 21 October 1990!!! Sandra and I more recently saw several while on a pelagic trip off Ucluelet, B.C. in mid-September of 2015. However, but since she doesn't really recall getting a good look, Sandra's counting this individual as her "life" sighting!!! Even tho' she doesn't keep an "official" list! ;P
