Observation details
While birding on the grassy road just south of the scrub line south of Open Grounds Farm, we stopped to look for a Northern Waterthrush we had heard. We were a little west of the first (eastern most) "mountain." After viewing the Northern Waterthrush, we noticed a mixed flock feeding in the grassy road and along the tree line. There were Palm Warblers, Blue Grosbeaks, and Indigo Buntings. A more colorful warbler flew by and landed on a snag. We got good looks at it and John, having seen Townsend's Warbler out west, got out Sibley's. We looked at numerous field marks and concluded that it was a Townsend's Warbler. We stayed with the flock for an hour and a half while they continued to feed in the grassy road, flying up to the trees occasionally. We saw the Townsend's catch numerous insect larvae. While watching the flock we also noticed a Dickcissel with the group. Approximate GPS location: 34.821355, -76.567544
