BAY: xNOTES: LNS notes: ZSYS z-Q2 filter used, hi shelf, -95 db, 1600 Hz. 05Aug2003 SAS. Reel notes: "AN/PQM-1A (open filters) Gray whales (3) two adult, 1 calf - the calf is feeding from mother. Group located just inside kelp bed. Water there smooth, as opposed to their normal route (which was a few hundred yards west of the kelp beds). Ship (LST) passed thru [sic] and broke up the stationary situation - whales then moved south. Kelp bed edge, Point Loma. 512~C tune fork. tone at start and end of reel. LST caused s wake, animals had to echolocate to pass thru water/wake disturbance. Filters out. 00:00 "We are starting our operation" ER - Pings (from DD few miles away). Prop, screws (from close LST). Overloading (xphone cable) (ship rolling). 06:15 Few weak knocks. 07:20 Few thump series. 07:40 Thumps start. 08:45 Good series musical thumps, puckers. 09:10 Better series. 10:07 Best series. 10:30 Best yet. 11:30 Low thumps + musical puckers. 1 Squeak. Includes some distant 950+~ E.R." Other recordist notes: "Joint Endeavor by NML [Narragansett Marine Laboratory] and Navy Sonar School. E.R. from a distant destroyer. Gray Whale echolocation trains on sonic, musical pulses (like running a finger along a comb). This was 1st recording known in 1967 of California Gray Whale sounds.".
