NOTES: NML studies, Narragansett Bay, 1951. Many monitored in field and seven (0.4-0.6 m) in NML test tank: deep thumps and bark-like grunts on alarm in field and noise from crushing and dragging shells on bottom. Escape sounds and thumps during competitive feeding in laboratory, as well as considerable mechanical noise incident to feeding. Similar loud thumps accompanied by spontaneous jump and forceful closing of mouth and opercula on ES. Fish, M.P. and W.H. Mowbray. 1970.
