Black-throated Green Warbler in Larches at Wascana Lake
Observation details
Among the warblers in the larches by the bridge, I saw two that i thought at first were Blackburnian Warblers. Dark yellow cheeks with dark marks, black streaks on pale lemon wash on breast and sides fading to white under the tail, black legs, small warbler bill, white outer tail feathers (not spots on corners). They were doing a good job of keeping larch branches between me and them. They fed about 8 to 10 feet up in the center of the larches, somewhat acrobatic. I didn't see them in the fruit bushes. The crown and face markings appeared to be more brown than black and it looked like there were 2 white wing bars not a white patch and a bar on the wings. There seemed to be a faint lemon yellow line under the tail. Too much white and too much yellow to be a Blackpoll. (I think) I did not notice pale streaks on the back like a Blackburnian. Evening light and the camera can change colours, but i saw a brownish-oliveish back that seems to show in one of the photos. Many thanks to reviewer Dan Sawatsky for his help identifying this bird.
