Media notes
with Herring Gull
Observation details
***Very high, new state high count; exact conservative count of birds flying in from the northwest towards the flats mixed with other gulls. Easy to pick out in flight by slender proportions, thin long wings, mantle color, and dark around eye and classic odd bill color on 2nd/3rd cycle birds. Some birds on the flats were estimated before I started counting the birds in flight on arrival. From my arrival until I left there were Lessers coming overhead, sometimes in tight flocks of up to six birds. Usually mixed in with other species. The vast majority were 3rd cycle and adult, with only two HY. After I ended my flyover count, there were many on the flats and outer beaches, surely including many birds not included in this count.
