Observation details
*****Mega. Apparent 3rd county record. Continuing rarity from yesterday found by Eunice Thein and Candy Giles. A rather unprecedented bird in this way as usual vagrant Say's Phoebe in Upstate NY are one day, or even one hour, wonders. Ran into Candy Giles and others on their way back and once I got onto the island, I joined Jim and Jessie Barry watching the birds and a group of shorebirds on the south side. The bird moved up and down the bay-side fence, sallying from perches, flycatching. Once it reached us on the fence, it went out to one of the lake-side fences. I moved on to scope for more shorebirds. On my way back, I ran into and had the pleasure of meeting Gary Chapin! We talked and watched the bird for a few minutes. State bird! County bird #252. Obvious phoebe-type flycatcher. Overall gray-brown with light colored wing highlights, and a darker facial area. Constantly bobbing tail. Distinct light orangish underparts.
