Observation details
First impression upon seeing it was of a dark, medium sized, long legged and winged egret smaller than GREG, larger than LBHE/SNEG flying on slow wingbeats. Bird immediately struck me as odd. Photos show little to no contrast between PP/SS and wing coverts and dark, purplish neck and breast contrasting with lighter gray of body. LBHE and GBHE do not show these characteristics. First seen flying upriver on the AZ side before I lost it behind vegetation. A few moments later, saw it after it landed along shoreline well upriver from me. Although very distant, saw an all-dark egret with active, SNEG-like foraging behavior. While running up the road for a closer look, lost sight of it and could not relocate.
