Observation details
Initially reported by John Ivanov this morning, I arrived at SJWS a little before 10 AM to a crowd of birders watching this bird on the mudflats at the southwest end of the pond C. This was a large sandpiper, being noticeably larger than the numerous Western Sandpiper present. The face, neck, and breast were a warm buff color, contrasting with the dark-streaked crown and primarily dark upper parts. The feathers of the back, and upper wings had pale fringes, imparting a scaly pattern to the upper parts. The belly and under tail coverts were white. The legs and feet were yellow, and the bill was black, and relatively short and slender for the size of the sandpiper.
