Observation details
Our group found the bird in Old Town in the mid-afternoon. This cooperative bird was observed by all birders on the island. Easily identified by bold pale lines on blackish back, large pink-based bill, dark lores, finely streaked nape, and tips of outer primaries that extended slightly beyond the tertials (visible in photos below). The bird did not call, despite being flushed a dozen times - finally, toward the end of the day the bird called at least 3 times, a very unpipit-like, rich, sharp, chip note, "tsip" or "chip", flatter and lower pitched than the squeakier call notes of other pipits.
