Observation details
We first heard this raptor in the riparian forest south of 2nd Ave about 100 yards west of the river, but were not able to see it in that dense habitat. Surprisingly, we heard it again on the Arizona side of the river and got our first views, albeit distant, of it there perched in an isolated cottonwood. It then flew further upstream, still on the AZ side of the river, and perched in another cottonwood (my poor digi-scoped photos taken at this time). It soon took flight and few back across the river to the same forest where we intiially heard it. It was an adult that was similar to a Red-shouldered Hawk in size, shape, and flying style. A pale gray hawk with boldly black and white banded tail.
