Observation details
An apparent adult female was on the spit of land near the inflow from the storage forebay on storage pond #2 and swam out into the pond as we approached. Another female was nearby on the same pond. These large ducks with long, gently-sloping foreheads and long, triangular bills were readily identified as Canvasbacks. Males in eclipse plumage would be rather similar but should show at least some blackish color in the breast, would not have as much light coloring around the eye, and would be very likely to show a more reddish tint to the head this late in the summer. To have one or two Canvasbacks present at the Modesto WTP during the summer is quite regular.
