Observation details
This bird was near the end of the Airport Dike Trail. It was pecking at the trail. It was rather tame and did not move around very much. The photos are very poor and were taken with an iPhone. This bird was small, perhaps as small or smaller than a Lincoln's sparrow, and short-legged. It had a striking chestnut ear patch, creamy eyering, very small triangular bill, thick black head stripe, grayish nape, and white underparts. The sides had grayish streaks. Feathers on the back, scapulars, and wing coverts had dark centers and paler outer edges. My daughter's boyfriend also observed the bird with good binoculars. Although he is not a birder, he is a good observer. He noted that the bird when it flew had white outer tail feathers.
