NOTES: This recording was made after some "spishing"; the bird was low in very dense growth along roadside through a rather scrubby part of the forest in a depression where streambed crossed the road; when seen, the bird was 1-2 meters up and 12-15 meters away; in response to playback the bird approached and gave other calls; the bird was seen relatively well in response to playback, to which it flew back-and-forth across the road; because the bird stopped calling before I saw it, I could not be absolutely certain that bird seen was the same as the one I recorded. Identification confirmed from tape by Kevin J. Zimmer. ML: Background subject changed from recordist's original identification of Ramphastos tucanus cuvieri to Ramphastos tucanus to conform to eBird Taxonomy (v. 1.55). -Jay McGowan/Matt Medler, July 2015. Response to playback: Approach. Habitat: Rainforest, Creek, Evergreen Forest, Second-growth, Scrub.
