Observation details
Flagged as rare, these birds were seen with a spotting scope in distant short grass looking at about two o’clock from Gate 2 on Newbys Shop Road, where there is space for only one car. A medium-sized shorebird with a small, round, dove-like head that was repeatedly bobbed while the bird was walking, large, dark eyes surrounded by a pale ring, relatively short, straight bill, longish, thin neck and a long tail. Plumage characteristics included brown upperparts and white underparts with dark barring on the sides and flanks. The bill appeared dark in the distance but at some angles briefly showed some yellow; the legs were never visible. Distinguished from a Buff-breasted Sandpiper by the larger size, longer bill, lack of buff coloration on the face and underparts and more extensive dark barring, not spots, on the underparts.
