Observation details
Flew into pond and stood on sticks, walked forward a few steps looking down at water, then flew up into trees. Brownish heron, medium sized, larger than Green Heron, much smaller than Great Blue. Distinguishing marks brownish body with large white spots easily visible on wings, yellow base to thick bill. Top of head looked darker than rest of body; charcoal color. Neck and chest with brownish streaks but not long stripes such as a Bittern. The white spots and yellow bill differentiate from Yellow-crowned. Distant photo.
