Media notes
This bird was first detected when I heard it calling repeatedly in the southwestern part of the "picnic" area, just south of the restroom building. The calls were, to my ear, consistent with those of local breeding birds in the San Bernardino Mountains and along the Mojave River near Victorville ("wheer"). The bill seemed pretty long and slender to me, but I am aware that there is some overlap in bill length between aculeata and tenuissima. After photographing the bird, I moved south into the main wetland area of the preserve; about 15 minutes later I heard the bird calling again, and then saw it fly out of the trees and continue southward toward the Whitewater Canyon Road crossing of the river, and out of sight. I did not encounter it again during the morning.
