Black-bellied Whistling-Duck
Observation details
First CT Record. Adult well seen and photographed by many during rain storm. First reported today by Bill Myers, who saw it today and earlier on 8/11. A large and long-necked duck with chestnut-brown body, black belly, white/gray wing stripe, bright rose-pink bill (with orangy area on top), dull pink legs, gray head with dark chestnut stripe down back of neck. Feeding in shallow rain pool by dabbling and tipping-up. Long-overdue state record as most surrounding states have multiple records. Earlier this summer there was a pair on north shore of Long Island, NY; and one flying west along the MA-RI coastline.
