Observation details
There were two scoters off to the west at the back edge of the waterfowl flock, only one showed a white wing patch. After consulting Sibley, I am confused as to why this bird shows only one round white spot behind the eye, and not white at the base of the bill as well, as should both WW and Surf. This is barely visible in the second photo. However, the slightly longer bill, flat head and slightly larger size indicate White-winged to me. The white wing patch looks quite bright and even-edged, not like an irregular pale area like what an molting Surf Scoter might possibly show. I think the other scoter in the picture is a Surf Scoter.
