Observation details
Viewed for about five minutes from alongside the bike path, between north Belle Haven parking area and Hunting Creek bridge. Bird flew off alone over river after that and not relocated. A bit smaller than Laughing Gulls around it. Rounder head. Smaller bill than Laughings, with no droop. Clearly defined half hood bordered by white nape and white forehead to crown. Clear white underparts (no gray wash on sides as in imm. Laughing Gulls). Legs appeared a bit shorter than those of larger Laughing Gulls standing next to it. When it flew off, we did not see white band across primaries, but that might have been difficult given the angle of view and likely would not have been easy to see given that this appears to be a first-summer bird. Clearly could see white crescents above and below eyes.
