Media notes
I placed the recorder in a bush near me, note that there are other birds calling on this recording. I used the the downward slurred"fweee" call as playback. At no point did the bird respond to this call with the same call as this. It responded as you can hear with either short note single or double note call but mostly with the three note call "peee pup pweeu" -this call or similar to it is on Xeno Canto. The tempo and intensity of call also varies . The bird stayed very close and was observed twice. There seemed to be two birds at one location on on either side of the road. - but I can't rule out the fact that it ran across the road. The recording quality in terms of me cluttering about is not good but one can clearly hear the call and note that the response is not always the same. I think this call used to be on the PK App or the Aus Birds. The bird is clearly not happy. I kept the playback level low.
Observation details
I suspect there were more. Two seen in one spot another heard in another. Some interesting behaviour seen. One bird literally popped up out of the grass, by this I mean it flew about 20-30 centimetres above the grass.(Ged Tranter another birder asked me a few weeks ago if I had seen this before as he had seen similar behaviour from what looked like small quail ) It was just a little black ball that popped up and then dropped straight back down. They seemed to have little tunnels that ran in the grass. Their stealth was amazing and in one case the bird circled me without me being able to see it at all at a distance of less than a meter or two. Call was also interesting and I will post this when I have edited it. The calls they used were not all those on the apps. They were a delight to see and really something special. I hated seeing them in a pet shop a few years ago.
