Observation details
*High count. Part of a fantastic shearwater show that was present on the east side all the way from the southern tip of South Monomoy to the northern tip of South Beach. We stopped at approximately every mile and scanned to count new birds. Later in the day, most of the birds were headed south. Many of the shearwaters were in close to shore (50-500 m), although especially at the southern tip, some were even in the surf. There were many large groups feeding along with terns and cormorants on small fish at the surface. We estimated by 10’s. Two individuals demonstrated variations of leucism. One individual seen at noon had four white outer primaries and a neatly defined white belly. Another individual was entirely a creamy buff color throughout the wings and body. Both of these aberrant individuals were photographed.
