Observation details
hard to be sure - First mentioned by Miguel Mendes on 8th Jan; located today by Pedro Ramalho at some distance so 60x scopes were useful, although fixed 32x was enough for most of what is described; Generally like male Mel nig, jet black plumage (a bit shiny but not glossy) with inner primaries paler than rest of wing, documented in pictures; bright orangey yellow patch obvious on bill, starting from top base of bill, where a small bulb was confirmedly seen by me more than once at 60x, above the nostrils -which seemed obvious in some positions (like black dots)- (thus ageing the bird as a 2nd cal male, which did not have a huge bulk over the culmen as some older males do), orangey yellow spread out to about 2/3 of bill (black tip) and that seemed to go almost to the sides of the gape (so quite broad transversally to the bill too). When preening chest feathers and facing us, it seemed like only the tip of the bill was black. Orangey yellow could apparently be seen with bird head pointing out to the sea (45% degrees or more away from us).
