Observation details
Spotted on the ocean just off of Anchor Way just a bit east of the rocky point southeast of Whaler Island. First detected them by their constant soft but crisp chip notes. At the time I couldn’t place the calls but then the pair popped up right in front of us maybe 20-30 feet offshore, which was rather surprising (even though there was at least one recent report off of Sand Mateo county a week or 2 ago). At first the birds were extremely active diving and foraging constantly for at least 5-10 minutes. After their bout of foraging the birds sat on the water preening and periodically flapping their wings and were still sitting when we decided to depart. We got to watch the birds for over 20-30 minutes. Took some phoneskoped photos and videos. Video:
