Media notes
taken on smart phone through binoculars, boldly marked head, yellowish crown visible, much smaller than great blue. deep gray belly, observed eating a cray fish. observed from as close as fifteen feet over an intimate course of half hour (twice- once down the creek, once up, so it was observed for the better part of an hour)
Observation details
spotted on branch fallen over creek, sometimes in the water, not shy (let us get very close), we spent about half hour with the bird, then my husband spent more time observing while paddling back up the creek (my daughter and I disembarked downstream and walked home). the yellow crowned night heron was seemingly curious about us, changing it's perch to get better looks. at one point caught and ate a cray fish, boldly marked and other-wordly. a very memorable animal encounter.
