Media notes
This is a photo I took today. I heard this bird calling and saw it sitting on this branch, but as soon as I got my camera up, it turned and flew away. There were two grouse, and I think both had chicks, but I couldn't be sure.
Observation details
I surprised a female with chicks. She was on one side of the road. They were on the other. She showed herself twice and kept calling to her little ones, but most of the time she hid from me. Oddly, another adult Ruffed Grouse showed itself at the same time. Perhaps they were in the same area because of a food source. I never saw the chicks, but heard them. This species is a permanent resident in the mountains here. I have take photos of them before, seen them with chicks, and heard them drumming.
