Observation details
Arriving in Medaryville late last night we were up very early this morning driving around the country roads near the Jasper Pulaski FWA looking for this rare crane. Near noon we came across a number of birders scoping a farmers cornfield at the junction where County Road 340N meets 1700W. We lucked out....they were looking at the Common Crane. We observed the bird feeding with an adult Sandhill Crane and two juvenile cranes. These four cranes remained together as a family group and during our 55 minute study of the birds seemed to totally avoid contact with any of other nearby cranes. The Common Crane was overall silver gray in colour with a long black neck and long black legs. I looked for and quickly saw the broad white curved stripe that began from behind the eye and separated the black head from the black neck. It was impossible to miss the birds obvious red crown patch. The bird occasionally spread it's wings revealing the black outer primary feathers.
