This next behavior I did not anticipate, andI was filled with awe over Jehovah's creative works, when I observed the Sihek begin to regurgitate a piece of wood that it burrowed from the tree, and dropped to the ground below. It never occurred to me that a bird would burrow a tree this way.
Observation details
Jun Ogo and I were driving around on June 24, looking for birds, and I noticed a Sihek (Mariana Kingfisher) on a power or cable line and stopped to take pictures. A second Sihek landed on the cable line a few feet away. I noticed that the beak was stained a shade of brown. In a matter of a few minutes, the second Sihek flew to a hole on the dead lemai (breadfruit) tree a few feet from where they were perched and stuck its head into the crevice on the tree. I took a picture of it as it backed out, and realized it was burrowing a nest in the tree. I continued to take photos of the Sihek because I noticed that it leaned forward and opened its mouth. It regurgitated a piece of wood and dropped it to the ground.
