Recorded using iPhone6 voice memo function, holding phone to open window; bird was singing about (guesstimate) 100m away.
Observation details
I was sleeping, with a window open, at Alheim Commons housing, Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, when I awoke at around 04:00 hearing a distant Chuck-will's-widow singing from across (south of) Laudholm Road, probably from south edge of corn field, which is bordered by an open forested wetland. Once I was awake, it sang for probably five minutes, during which time I was able to make the attached recording. About 5-10 minutes later it briefly sang once more, but within about five minutes after that the predawn chorus started, including singing Gray Catbird, American Robin, and Eastern Towhee. Bird was not heard by myself or others that evening, and I left the window wide open through the night and did not hear it, nor was it heard the evening of 3 July (Noah Gibb, post to Maine-Birds list serve). Song was classic "chuck-will's-widow"; despite distance, opening "chuck" discernible both by ear and in recording.
